Course Description
Candidates of Social Science Senior will explore the disciplines and theories underpinning the study of anthropology, psychology, and sociology. This course examines program planning, learning expectations and organizational approaches to the study of the Social Sciences. Candidates will learn about the secondary school environment and the adolescent learner while engaging in interactive discussions and activities. The successful candidate will learn to apply current learning strategies, assessment and evaluation structures, as well as principles of curriculum design for Senior Social Science. Candidates will also investigate current pedagogical approaches related to teaching and learning in the grade 11 and 12 Social Science classroom.Prerequisites
- Certificate of Qualification:
Must be a registered member of the Ontario College of Teachers. -
Post-Secondary Education:
Must hold an acceptable post-secondary degree or equivalent qualifications.

2 Full University Degree Credits in the Subject:
Official transcript(s) showing proof of successful completion of a minimum of 2.0 university degree credits or the equivalent in the teaching subject. Acceptable Social Sciences-related subjects include Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Law, Philosophy, Politics, Religion and Women's And Gender Studies (courses are determined to be eligible at the discretion of Continuing and Professional Learning).
PLEASE NOTE:
1.0 university degree credits is the equivalent to 1 full year course, or, 2 half-year courses.
Recommendations
Successful completion is a final grade of C-Upon successful completion of the course, a recommendation will be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers.
Mark is an Administrator in the YRDSB after having taught for 20 years in Ontario and Quebec. Mark has taught at OISE for the past 15 years and has written curriculum and worked with educational publishers. Mark is experienced with curriculum design, implementation of digital tools and the development of dynamic classroom spaces. Along with instructional leadership, Mark has a deep passion for genocide studies, global politics and historical thinking skills. Mark has been recognized for his work with the Governor General’s Award for Teaching Excellence, the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence and the OISE Award for Excellence in Continuing Education.
