Course Description

This is an introductory course that aims at preparing teachers for the three French as a Second Language programs: Core French, Extended French and French Immersion. Throughout the course, candidates will explore theories relevant to the teaching and learning of a second language as per the French as a Second Language curriculum in Ontario. This course will also focus on developing and using teaching strategies necessary to engage students and promote student success in FSL. The course is designed to provide teachers an opportunity to use their knowledge of the French language and culture to plan effectively.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for Part 1:

  1. Certificate of Qualification:
    Must be a registered member of the Ontario College of Teachers.

  2. Pre-Admission Test in French:
    Successful completion of the French Proficiency Test at OISE within the last 3 years. Information on the French test can be found here: https://cpl.oise.utoronto.ca/course/french-proficiency-test/
Exceptions from the French test may only be granted in limited circumstances, and only if the learner possesses one of the following:
  • A major in French language, linguistics or literature at the University level i.e. Bachelors, Masters or higher (official transcript required from the post-secondary Institution) - fewer courses then a full major are not acceptable.
  • If you have attended a Francophone teacher education program, or Francophone University, where the language of instruction was French for all university courses completed (official transcript required from the post-secondary Institution)
  • DELF/DALF level B2 or higher
  • Hold Basic Qualifications for teaching in Francophone schools (i.e, primaire, moyen, intermédiare, and/or supérieur)

Language experience during high school, or prior, is not sufficient for our requirements (example high-school French Immersion program).

 

Please Note:

Any exceptions and additional requirements are noted below.

  • Part I courses do not lead to a divisional entry on the Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification. See Primary, Junior/Intermediate, and Senior Basic Qualifications.

Recommendations

Successful completion is a final grade of C-

 

Upon successful completion of the course, a recommendation will be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers.

This session will run for 5 weeks. Your learning will take the form of in-depth online discussions, readings, videos in a facilitator paced asynchronous course.

Learners will be expected to engage in approximately 25 hours of learning per week for a total of 125 hours:

  • 100 hours online learning (asynchronous, but facilitator-led and paced into modules)
  • 25 hours assignments and independent study
