Course Description

Guidance and Career Education Part 1 is a foundational course, designed for both the classroom teacher and for the educator who is interested in pursuing a Guidance role in their school board. Guidance and Career Education Part 1 will help teachers apply guidance principles to their classroom teaching, including effective strategies for implementing Creating Pathways to Success and other current policies and programs related to Guidance and Career Education. Opportunities to explore current school issues using instructional approaches such as reflective activities, online research, individual, paired and group tasks, videos, discussion forums, case studies and simulation activities. Topics include Student Success, Counselling Techniques, Caring and Safe Schools, Mental Health, Diversity, Ethical Issues in Guidance, Pathways Planning, Family Systems, as well as Community Supports for issues related to Substance Abuse, Eating Disorders and Destructive Behaviours.

Notes

Teachers holding qualifications in technological education are also eligible to take this Three-Session Qualification course.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for Part 1:

  1. Certificate of Qualification:
    Must be a registered member of the Ontario College of Teachers. 

Please Note:

Any exceptions and additional requirements are noted below.

  • Part I courses do not lead to a divisional entry on the Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification. See Primary, Junior/Intermediate, and Senior Basic Qualifications.

Recommendations

Successful completion is a final grade of C-

Upon successful completion of the course, a recommendation will be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers.

This session will run intensively for 3 weeks. Your learning will take the form of in-depth online discussions as well as group and individual assignments.

Learners will be expected to engage in approximately 42 hours of learning per week for a total of 125 hours. Please ensure you consider your other personal/professional obligations when planning for Summer learning.

  • 100 hours online learning (asynchronous, but facilitator-led and paced into modules)
  • 25 hours assignments and independent study
