Course Description

Continuing with topics explored in Guidance and Career Education Parts 1 and 2, this course focuses on opportunities for candidates to become involved in guidance leadership roles in school guidance departments. Candidates concentrate on the changing roles and responsibilities of counsellors as well as leadership in the school. Skills in personal counselling, consultation, co-ordination of services and programs, and the development and delivery of guidance programs are discussed. Instructional methods include: small group research, carousel presentations, personal growth portfolios as well as discussion of issues and dilemmas relevant to guidance and career education. Practical application of technology is also explored, and time is devoted to Ministry documents such as OSR Management, Guidance and Career Education course offerings and Transition planning.

Notes

Teachers holding qualifications in technological education are also eligible to take this Three-Session Qualification course.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for Specialist:

  1. Completion of Part 1 and Part 2:
    A current Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification showing successful completion of Part 1 and Part 2 of the three-session qualification.

  2. Certificate of Teaching Experience – 2 Years:
    Evidence of at least two (2) years of successful teaching experience, including one (1) year of experience in the subject in which the qualification is being sought. This experience must be certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer on the 'OISE Certification of Teaching Experience Form'.

  • We do not have the authority to determine whether or not candidates meet the teaching experience prerequisite for Part 2 and Part 3 AQs. We are responsible only for collecting the Certificate of Teaching Experience once it has been signed by the appropriate authority. Recommendations

Successful completion is a final grade of B-

Upon successful completion of the course, a recommendation will be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers.

This session will run intensively for 3 weeks. Your learning will take the form of in-depth online discussions as well as group and individual assignments.

Learners will be expected to engage in approximately 42 hours of learning per week for a total of 125 hours. Please ensure you consider your other personal/professional obligations when planning for Summer learning.

  • 100 hours online learning (asynchronous, but facilitator-led and paced into modules)
  • 25 hours assignments and independent study
