Course Description

The practicum is an orientation to schools (with a focus on the broader school community) and classroom practice. The length of the practicum is 20 days in class, additionally 2-5 observation days are provided for the opportunity to meet your Associate Teacher and become oriented to the school. Dependent upon time requirement specified by the Ontario College of Teachers, you may need to take multiple practicums. The practicum involves teacher candidates observing and teaching classes, exploring broader school themes and issues, and assessing /reflecting on their aptitude for and commitment to teaching as a career.

You will have the same experience as a teacher candidate in a Master of Teaching program at OISE. Click to view the Master of Teaching Practicum website for important information, including forms and templates to be used during your practicum.

Prerequisites

  1. Conditional Certificate or Application to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT)
    Must be registered with the OCT, and have a condition on your certificate of teaching that you must complete a practicum OR have a letter from the OCT with a 6 digit application number and stating that you need to complete a a practicum at an Ontario faculty of education to meet the minimum registration requirements with OCT.
     
  2. Evidence of Language Proficiency
    If your letter from OCT states that you have not met the language proficiency, you must provide proof that you have satisfied the language proficiency based on OCT requirements. 

It is your responsibility to submit the following documents to the School Board prior to your practicum placement. 

  • Police Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector with Mental Health Clearance. If you are unsure of how to obtain this letter, we can provide guidance. after registration, you will be provided with specific instructions of how to submit the record check to the appropriate school board. 
  • Completing the Ministry of Labour’s Health and Safety training video and printing out a copy of the “Certificate of Completion”  https://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/elearn/worker/foursteps.php
