Course Description

Aristotle said that the "Law is reason, free from passion." However, he was only half right. The law is, in fact, full of passion. Taking the OISE Law ABQ provides an exciting opportunity for both new and experienced teachers to independently and objectively evaluate how law permeates our society. This ABQ will develop your familiarity with legal principles, theories and content as you examine the Ontario Ministry documents and curriculum expectations in order to develop Lessons and Units that will support your teaching practices. Learning about key concepts such as Human Rights, Criminal and Civil Law, will help new law teachers to develop effective instructional strategies and teaching practices that will encourage their own students to think critically. Candidates will have ample opportunities to create and explore practical activities and content to implement in senior law classes that encourage a positive, equitable learning environment.

Prerequisites

  1. Certificate of Qualification:
    Must be a registered member of the Ontario College of Teachers.

  2. Post-Secondary Education:

    Must hold an acceptable post-secondary degree or equivalent qualifications.

  3. 2 Full University Degree Credits in the Subject:
    Official transcript(s) showing proof of successful completion of a minimum of 2.0 university degree credits or the equivalent in the teaching subject.

    Note: related subjects may include Economics, Geography, History, Law, Politics and Social Science.

PLEASE NOTE:

1.0 university degree credits is the equivalent to 1 full year course, or, 2 half-year courses.

Recommendations

Successful completion is a final grade of C-

Upon successful completion of the course, a recommendation will be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers.

Course Format

This 3-week course runs fully online in a blend of asynchronous and optional synchronous (live) sessions. It is instructor-led and organized into weekly modules that include readings, discussions, and assignments with set due dates. Learners typically spend 40–42 hours per week engaging with course materials and completing activities, though the exact time may vary by learning style and prior experience.

Technology Requirements

You’ll need a reliable internet connection and a modern web browser to access course materials. Optional live sessions (if offered) will be announced within the course site.
