Course Description
In Part 2, candidates who are interested or actively pursuing instructional leadership opportunities in Reading & Literacy will focus on targeted reading assessments and evidence-informed interventions to enable classroom and school-wide teaching & learning practices for literacy development.
Candidates will explore contemporary literature that has acted as a catalyst for change in literacy instruction, assessment, and evaluation. Candidates will develop a suite of assessment and evaluation tools and strategies to support students experiencing barriers to literacy. Through various guided practical exercises, candidates will continually reflect upon their professional practices, refine their professional judgment, and generate new knowledge about reading assessment and evaluation. Candidates will explore evidence-informed strategies to differentiate instruction, provide targeted intervention, and monitor students' progress based on results from reading inventories and assessment data.
Notes
This course has been recently redesigned in alignment with the new Ontario Curricula (2023) which has been informed by Right to Read and the Science of Reading.
Teachers holding qualifications in technological education are also eligible to take this Three-Session Qualification course.
Prerequisites
Prerequisites for Part 2:
- Completion of Part 1 or the equivalent:
A current Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification showing successful completion of Part 1 or the equivalent of the three-session qualification.
- Certificate of Teaching Experience โ 1 Year:
Evidence of at least one (1) year of successful teaching experience certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer or proof of at least one (1) year of successful teaching experience outside Ontario certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer on the OISE Certificate of Teaching Experience Form.

We are responsible only for collecting the Certificate of Teaching Experience once it has been signed by the appropriate authority. Please direct all inquiries regarding teaching experience to your employer.
Recommendations
Upon successful completion of the course, a recommendation will be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers.
This course has moved from letter-based grading to competency-based rubrics which are applied across course performance tasks. Learners must demonstrate a minimum proficiency across all tasks in order to successfully complete the course. Course performance tasks balance professional reflection, professional inquiry, and tangible instructional, assessment, and resource planning.

- Developing: You are developing professional capacity and capability commensurate with this professional qualification.
- Proficient: You have achieved professional capacity and capability commensurate with this professional qualification.
- Advanced: You have achieved professional capacity and capability commensurate with this professional qualification and have demonstrated expertise in this area of professional practice.
To complete this course successfully and gain your qualification, all performance tasks will demonstrate criteria associated with the Proficient or Advanced ratings.
