Course Description
Start your journey to becoming an IB-certified educator.
This 6-week, fully online course is your introduction to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP). You'll explore the core philosophy of IB education and learn how to design curriculum that reflects its international focus and inquiry-based approach.
Through the IB's learning cycle - Inquire, Act, Reflect - you'll begin developing your own unit of inquiry while gaining practical strategies for curriculum planning, instructional design, and learning engagement.
Course Format:
- Runs over 6 weeks, fully online
- Includes weekly-paced modules and optional live sessions
- Facilitated by an experienced IB educator
- Includes weekly tasks, discussions and assignments with set deadlines

This is course 1 of 4 in the OISE Certificate in International Education for IB. Courses must be completed in sequence:

Upon completion of the IB1 course, you will have learned:
- The mission and educational philosophy of the IB
- Key components of the IB Diploma Programme curriculum
- Instructional design principles for creating authentic, inquiry-based learning
- Strategies to promote the IB approach within your school
- How the Diploma Programme aligns with the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Career-Related Programmes (CP).
Notes
This course requires a computer with a camera, headphones/speakers, microphone, and high-speed internet to access OISE course materials and other resources.Prerequisites
To enroll, you must meet all programme entry requirements, which includes three key areas:
Subject Specialization (Required for IB Recognition)
You must select a specialization subject from the IB Diploma Programme specialization options (i.e., Mathematics, Biology, History, English, etc.)
OISE will assign you a mentor for completion of the Capstone Project in IB4
Education and/or Experience
- Academic Pathway:
A bachelor's degree that includes at least 8 half-credit courses in your chosen specialization subject (verified through post-secondary transcripts)
or
- Professional Experience Pathway:
At least 3 years of full-time teaching experience at the high school level (grades 9-12) in your chosen specialization subject, verified through the IB Certificate of Teaching Experience form in the PK12-IB1 application.
English Language Proficiency
If your undergraduate degree was not completed in English, you must submit proof of one of the following:
- IELTS (Academic): Minimum 6.5 in all sections
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 79 overall
Note: Test results must have been written within the past 24 months at the time of application. Scores older than 24 months are not accepted towards admission into the IB Diploma programme.
Teaching Certification
You must have one of the following:
- A recognized teaching degree or license from any jurisdiction in the world
or
- At least 3 years of full-time teaching experience at the high school level (grades 9-12) in your chosen specialization subject, verified through the IB Certificate of Teaching Experience form in the PK12-IB1 application.
Note: Applications must be approved in advance of the course start date. If you do not meet the requirements, we will contact you to discuss your options.
Recommendations
The minimum passing grade for the IB1 course is a C- (60%), per the OISE CPL grading scale.
Upon successful completion of all four courses, you will be issued a digital copy of your OISE Certificate in International Education for IB - Diploma Programme.
With over 20 years of experience in global education, Kelly Longmore is currently a Vice-Principal at an IB continuum school in Toronto. Her career spans three IB World Schools, where she has held a diverse range of roles including Head of Department, ESL and International Languages Coordinator, and MYP/DP teacher for both Language A and B. A dedicated mentor, she has also served as an Extended Essay supervisor and Personal Project Advisor. Kelly’s professional journey is truly international, with teaching tenures in South Korea, the United Kingdom, the Bahamas, and Canada. Beyond the classroom, she is a registered teacher with the Ontario College of Teachers and an avid contributor to the IB community, serving as an MYP Building Quality Curriculum Senior Reviewer, Workshop Leader, Programme Field Representative, and IBEC Faculty member. Her extensive expertise is underpinned by a B.A. from the University of Guelph (Canada), a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning from Christchurch College of Education (New Zealand), and an M.Ed. from York University (Canada).
