PK12-SPEC1S - Special Education Part 1 (Secondary Focus)
Course Description
Special Education Part 1 provides an overview of special education. This includes an introduction to the various exceptionalities, working with program planning and delivery challenges, awareness of assistive technology, classroom management skills, as well as knowledge of other issues related to teaching students with special needs in a variety of settings. This course will be of greatest interest to those teachers who wish to deepen their knowledge regarding students with exceptionalities, noting the Ministry of Education's move to greater inclusion. Participants leave the course with a number of valuable resources to enhance their teaching practice.
Notes
Teachers holding qualifications in technological education are also eligible to take this Three-Session Qualification course.

Must be a registered member of the Ontario College of Teachers.
Please Note:
- Successful completion of all versions of this course (SPEC1E/SPEC1S/SPEC1) will lead to a "Special Education Part 1" qualification with the Ontario College of Teachers. A distinction is made between the "Elementary" and "Secondary" Focus courses to offer teachers the opportunity to engage with colleagues within the same teaching panel.
Recommendations
Successful completion is a final grade of C-Upon successful completion of the course, a recommendation will be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers.
This is Allen’s 15th year of facilitating Special Education Additional Qualification online courses at OISE. His work at CPL is grounded in over 25 years of experience providing special education programming at the TDSB, of which better than 20 have been in leadership roles. He has written special education curriculum for the TDSB and has revised and updated Special Education Additional Qualification courses at CPL/OISE. In addition to his position at CPL/OISE, Allen is currently a Curriculum Leader with the TDSB.
I have been involved in many different capacities within the education system. I have taught in the primary, junior and intermediate divisions. I have worked in the university capacity focusing on the ESL and literacy instruction. Literacy and ESL are truly my passion and I have taught and designed courses to fit a conceptual model that advocates for all learners, promoting differentiation strategies for 21st century learners! Meeting the needs of students through the multimodality within the dual language context, promoting students’ identity, utilizing technology is a primary focus of mine. I have worked and written a research article with Dr. Jim Cummins from the University of Toronto focusing on student identity and multilingual texts.
