Course Description

Walk-in and single session therapy and counselling are increasingly used as effective ways to provide useful, meaningful, “just-in-time” and “one-at-a-time” services to a wide range of clients in a variety of settings.  Research confirms that single sessions are effective for children, adolescents, and adults, produce high rates of client satisfaction, and can have long-lasting results.

This experiential course will provide participants with a comprehensive foundation in the elements and skills of brief therapy that define and inform the Solution-Focused approach to single session therapy and counselling.  This includes defining and developing the single session mindset, how Solution-Focused Therapy is one of the best fits for Single Session Therapy (SST), the research supporting SST, the assumptions and practitioner stance of SST, step-by-step guidelines and techniques for applying the elements of solution-focused therapy to SST, and micro-questions for conducting effective single session therapy.

PLEASE NOTE: The SFBTC Program is undergoing a programmatic review over academic year 2023-2024, and courses have been scheduled up until August 2024 at which point the Program and courses will pause. More information will be shared as we near the end of the Program Review period.

Course Outline

Single Session Therapy (SST) and counselling operates from the assumptions that each session is a whole, potentially complete entity in itself; that the power is ultimately in the client; that all you really have is now; and that helping people make small changes can lead to significant and lasting changes after one session.  This workshop offers opportunities to learn and apply these powerful and empowering assumptions and their accompanying techniques to your work with a variety of clients in a range of settings.  Interactive presentations, video-recorded examples of single sessions, and experiential exercises will be used to create an engaging, enjoyable, useful, and challenging learning experience.
